Hiro @ Kovan

In Kovan, there is a Japanese stall called "Hiro" that serves the cheapest ramen. Two young chaps (Singaporean looking to me) and a middle-aged Japanese man were running the place. They sell Japanese dishes like curry rice, shogayaki, gyoza, and ramen.

Left: Black garlic tonkotsu ramen ($5.50)
Right: Hakata ramen ($5)
The only difference between the two, as far as I can tell, is that one has a topping of black garlic oil.

As evidenced from the picture, the servings are generous, comparable to most ramen places. Each bowl is topped with chashu, black fungus, seaweed, spring onions and a lava egg. The soup is full of flavour and quite delicious! It must be one of the thickest and creamiest ramen soups around. I regret my decision of drinking the soup because it's really too thick and greasy. Don't say i didn't warn you... I think it would be better if they made the soup lighter

Otherwise, the noodles are springy and the chashu is decent. The eggs are not bad, slightly overcooked at the edge of the yolk but no big deal. It's only $5! And many other Ramen stalls actually do it worse.

The garlic oil is too overpowering though, unless you really like the taste of charred garlic. I would skip it. They also have a lighter, shoyu based gomoku ramen that is healthier. That might be a safer option. Heard the gyoza is $4 for 8 pieces also.

It is located at 203 Hougang Street 21, a short walk from kovan mrt, after the stretch of DBS near the food centre. This same kopitiam also has nice beef noodles. Gotta try this weekend!
